How We Evaluate
We're upfront about what this methodology is and isn't. We do not run every unit through a climate-controlled lab — that's an honest limitation, and any site that implies otherwise for a 40-product catalog without showing the lab is not being straight with you. Here's what we actually do:
1. Spec verification against the source
Every number in our spec tables — capacity, wattage, coverage, noise, dimensions, warranty — is checked against the manufacturer's own data sheet or installation manual, not a retailer's marketing copy. A product stays out of our review queue until that verification is complete.
2. Computed, documented operating cost
We calculate annual operating cost from rated wattage, an assumed duty cycle, and your region's actual electricity rate — and we show the assumption on the page, not just the number. You can check our math.
3. Real climate-zone data, not generic advice
Sizing and run-time guidance is tied to IECC climate zone data — humidity load and electricity cost genuinely differ by region for this product category, so a Gulf Coast recommendation and a Mountain-West recommendation should differ too.
4. Owner and installer experience, where we have it
Where our own hands-on experience with a specific unit exists, we say so explicitly and distinguish it clearly from spec-sheet-derived claims. We do not manufacture testimonials.
What we don't do
- We don't accept payment for a favorable review or score.
- We don't publish a spec we can't source.
- We don't hide real cons to protect an affiliate link.
